Hair Care

The ability of your hair to absorb and hold water – it determines which care products to choose. Hair is classified as low, medium or high porosity.

Hair Porosity
Key facts
Type
Structural hair characteristic
Who it's for
Every hair type – once you know your porosity, you can pick the right care
What helps
Humectants (low), emollients (medium), proteins + humectants (high)
What to avoid
Large amounts of humectants on high-porosity hair in low humidity

What is hair porosity?

Porosity is the ability of your hair to absorb and hold water. It depends on how the cuticle scales lie and determines the choice of care products and techniques.

What porosity types are there?

Low porosity – tightly closed cuticles, water and products struggle to get in. Medium porosity – healthy, easy to care for. High porosity – damaged or curly, absorbs moisture quickly and loses it just as fast.

How do you determine your porosity?

The water test: place a shed hair in a glass of water. Low porosity – it floats. Medium – it sinks slowly. High – it sinks quickly.

How do you care for hair by porosity?

Low: lightweight products, rinsing with warm water opens the cuticles. Medium: standard care. High: proteins rebuild the structure, rich emollients lock in moisture.
