What is dandruff?

Dandruff is dead skin cells from the scalp that show up as white or yellowish flakes. The yeast Malassezia or disrupted sebum production is usually behind it.

What types of dandruff are there?

Dry dandruff – small, white flakes on a dry scalp. Oily dandruff – yellowish, greasy flakes caused by excess sebum production.

What helps with dandruff?

Anti-dandruff shampoos with piroctone olamine, salicylic acid or sulfur two to three times a week. A scalp massage boosts circulation and helps loosen flakes. If dandruff lasts longer than four weeks, have a dermatologist check the cause.

How do you prevent dandruff?

Wash your hair regularly, reduce stress and eat a balanced diet with zinc and B vitamins. Avoid alcohol-based products that irritate the scalp.
