What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis (seborrheic eczema) is a chronic condition of oily skin caused by overactive sebaceous glands and the yeast Malassezia. Typical signs are greasy, yellowish or white flakes and redness.

What are the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis?

Greasy, flaky patches on the scalp, on the face (nose, eyebrows, around the mouth) and on the chest. These come with itching and redness.

What causes it?

Overactive sebaceous glands, the yeast Malassezia, stress, hormonal changes and a weakened immune system.

How do you care for skin with seborrheic dermatitis?

If symptoms are severe, your dermatologist may prescribe antifungal shampoos and creams, for example with ketoconazole. For daily care, gentle products with piroctone olamine and zinc help; niacinamide regulates sebum and soothes the skin. Avoid heavy oils on the affected areas.
